Animal Control

Mission Statement

The mission of the Davidson County Animal Shelter is to provide shelter and care to domestic companion animals, to reunite lost pets with their owners, to aid in the relief of suffering among animals and the encouragement of animal population control. The shelter strives to promote responsible pet ownership by utilizing a spay and neuter program.

Shelter Policy

Stray animals are held for 72 hours before they are eligible to be released for adoption. This time period allows the current owner time to reclaim a lost pet. During this period the animal will be evaluated to determine their temperament and general health. Every effort is made to obtain accurate information about all animals placed for adoption, but please understand that many times our ability to obtain basic information is limited. Owner surrendered animals can be placed immediately up for adoption and we can generally obtain more accurate information about these animals. Our capacity to keep adoptable animals is limited. Those animals will be spayed or neutered and given basic health checks, vaccinations and rabies injections before being released to a new home. All of these adoptable pets will be kept at the shelter until they find new homes. There is no time limit. Every time you adopt a shelter pet you make room for one more pet to be saved. In the interest of community safety, the shelter does not offer for adoption any vicious or aggressive animals.
